Ash Wednesday (7pm)

  • Good Shepherd Nashville 7501 Old Harding Pike Nashville, TN, 37221 United States (map)

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent—a forty-day journey of prayer, repentance, and preparation for Easter. From the earliest centuries of the Church, Ash Wednesday has been observed as a solemn day that calls Christians to reflect on the reality of human mortality and the depth of God’s mercy.

The use of ashes comes from ancient biblical practices of repentance and humility. Ashes remind us that we are finite—“dust, and to dust you shall return”—and that our hope rests not in ourselves, but in God’s grace. They are also a sign of repentance, inviting us to turn again toward God with honesty, humility, and trust.

Ash Wednesday matters because it helps reorient our hearts. It invites us to slow down, examine our lives, confess our sins, and begin again. Lent is not about shame or self-punishment, but about renewal—making space for God to do deep and lasting work within us.

All are welcome—whether this is a long-standing tradition for you or your first time attending an Ash Wednesday service. We will offer two services: one at 12pm and one at 7pm.

Join us as we begin the Lenten journey together, grounded in honesty, hope, and the promise of God’s redeeming love.
