What is Private Confession?
In the Anglican tradition, all are encouraged to bring their sins before God—daily in prayer and together in corporate worship. Yet from the earliest days, the Church has also offered the gentle, healing ministry of private (or auricular) confession with a priest. While never required (“none must”), it’s open to everyone (“all may”), and for those who find themselves burdened or uncertain, it can be a powerful way to hear God’s endless mercy and grace proclaimed over you and your sin (“some should”). Here at Good Shepherd, we encourage (not require) all to consider this practice at least annually, as it can provide a tangible moment of grace and fresh confidence in the forgiveness Christ extends to all of us.
In a world where forgiveness can feel remote, private confession allows you to receive Christ’s pardon in a way that is both deeply personal and anchored in the Church’s enduring witness. Importantly, anything shared in confession is protected by the **seal of the confessional**, which is morally absolute for those who hear a private confession. This sacred seal ensures that whatever is confessed remains completely confidential, offering a safe and trustworthy space to speak openly and honestly.
What to Expect
Our priests will guide you through this simple, prayerful rite. There is no interrogation or judgment—only the proclamation of what God has already accomplished in and through Jesus. By offering your sin and fears to the Lord, you open the door to a gentle, healing presence that restores hope and sets you back on the path of discipleship.
Consider making use of this ministry when you feel the need. It can be a moment when the good news is not just heard, but truly felt—a reminder that in Christ, you are beloved, forgiven, and invited forward into God’s new creation.
When and Where Confessions Are Heard
At Good Shepherd, private confessions can be made at two convenient times:
Sunday Mornings: Before the service, confessions are typically heard in the sanctuary. You will sit with a priest on the front row, facing the Altar cross. This arrangement preserves privacy, simplicity, and reverence, as you bring your sins before God in the sacred space of communal worship.
Weekdays in the Chapel: For those seeking a quieter, more private setting, confessions can also be arranged during the week in our chapel.
To schedule a time, you may reach out to Fr. Austin directly or schedule a time below. Additionally, you can speak with any parish priests.
