What is Shrove Tuesday? Celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday, Shrove Tuesday (also known as “Pancake Tuesday” or “Fat Tuesday”) is the final day before the 40-day season of Lent begins, a season of fasting and penitence. The word "shrove" comes from the Germanic-Old English word “shrive,” meaning absolve. Historically, this was the day that Christians would go to be “shriven” by their confessor. Likewise, it has become a day for pre-fasting indulgences. In particular, the need to use up rich ingredients such as butter, milk, sugar, and eggs before Lent gave rise to this fun tradition of eating pancakes together on this day.
